Pre-Marital Counseling

Why Pre-Marital Counseling?

Some people, upon hearing that a couple is considering pre-marital counseling, might wonder if it bodes poorly for the relationship. They might feel that if there are problems this early, then how can things possibly get better?  In some cases, they might be correct. Constant conflict might be a sign that things will only get worse. But even in relationships where there is strong love and mutuality, there are times that potential heartache can be avoided by addressing areas of concern early on. So often, the excitement and stress of planning a wedding provides a distraction from areas of nagging doubt, or discussions that should be held before, and not after, the wedding. Couples are often surprised that assumptions they held about each other's opinions, tastes, and wishes were not accurate. While it's not important to agree on everything, acknowledging each other's point of view is essential. Assumptions about child-rearing, the role of work and career, male-female roles, religious differences, sexual issues, are but a few of the issues it is good to resolve before the wedding day. Having a safe place, with a neutral third party, to talk these and other issues out can go a long way towards ensuring a happy and satisfying future together.
